BROWNING MUMMERY: With roots in the early 80s Sydney experimental/electronic music scene, Browning Mummery has become an enduring presence in the Australian music underground. BM continues to defy genre limits with a floating collective lineup of collaborators old and new, from bands such as X in O, Bremen Town Musician, Shining Vril, Abu Slinky, Cured Pink, and others. Browning has recorded and performed for 30 years, and continues to challenge audiences into the future.
Browning Mummery commemorates 30 years with a series of performances and a new CD album 'Epistle to the Zone Enders'. On April 5 BM returns to Sydney for the first time since the early 90s, with collaborators Gavin Williams (ex-WKOSA and contributor since the 80s) and Mike Norris (Aka Abu Slinky, contributor since 2000s appearing on 'Epistle'). The performance will feature both tracks from the new CD, and a selection of pieces from early to recent periods specially interpreted for the occasion.
DOG ACT (all caps): A squat in Antwerp, A studio in East Brunswick, A shed in West Brunswick, An office in Armadale. These are the places that DOG ACT (all caps) inhabits and has yet to make a positive mark on. The incorrect use of computers meets voice and bass. We are still arguing over the guitar. Would rather be hardware. Have to be nowhere. See you somewhere!
MONOLITH: The solo project of Melbourne based artist and multi-instrumentalist Peter James. Peter began playing music in various noise and punk bands during the 1980’s and has been performing & releasing tracks from his band project Wolf 359 since 2005. The Monolith project began in 2011 and with the first release ‘Spectres’ he set about exploring dense drones. Monolith’s music has shifted to a more rhythmic edge with stripped back mantric beat patterns and dark chords. With the latest offering KIPL110312 Monolith has moved into misty subterranean sound fields – the result ‘cold rhythmic catharsis’.
Monolith’s work is primarily based around mesmerising industrial styled drones and sound cut ups overlayed with minimal rhythms to create dark and foreboding soundscapes. Primitive, minimalist, industrial bleakness.
FROSTY: Frosty are a portable 2 – piece electronic trance act with Michael Tee (Scattered Order, A Cloakroom Assembly) punching out extended dance beat grooves; triggering hot line fallouts and effusing the mix with gritty guitar & soft synth orchestrations. Shane Fahey (Scattered Order, Social Interiors) plays bass on an arp; triggers arp alarm samples & signs off with some pad synthesis melodies.
This is live & robust drum ‘n bass with film pad overlays & instrumental breaks & fills. At times the beat gives way to semi-rapturous erotica & is picked up again being further regurgitated with the rhythm entering into a jittering cacophony.
Less sound art and more instrumentally rhythmic these beats are compositions in the making.
