Sound finder and noise maker Automating has released a new album, SET.
This work is the result of a collusion with legendary 'mood engineer' Andrew McKenzie (aka every member of The Hafler Trio since 1987).
From ancient Mac computers running bespoke software and operating systems to tyre irons to lullabies to washed out cassettes - this is sonic recycling, with a fair bit of sonic waste removal thrown in. SET is a departure from both artists' previous work, which has at times been a challenging listening experience. SET is remarkably accessible: there's even a track you can dance to, If you're exceptionally flexible.
The limited edition, glass master CDs are presented in painstakingly assembled cases, made from material gleaned over many years and many places. Hand stamped recycled cans, maps, deadstock CD cases, instant photos and half-inch videotape are mixed with original artwork by McKenzie, making each piece a one off experience, or rather SET of experiences.
Sifting through the sonic waste and discarded technology left by the roadside of a world speeding too fast. Field recordings, found sounds, tape manipulation, noise, effects units and whoops there it is. Currently doing live and studio created binaural soundscapes and archaic tape based drones. There’s no hill to die on.
Sasha is mostly in and around Melbourne, Australia. Sometimes he’s 'Automating', a solo exploratory project, sometime’s he’s 'Constant Light', a kosmische drone-pop duo; and sometime’s he’s 'Second Language Records', a boutique small-run record label. Right now, he’s right here.
